2 coyotes removed from Scottsdale neighborhood after attack

Officials with the Arizona Game and Fish Department said they have received reports that coyotes in the area are becoming increasingly aggressive.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Two coyotes were removed from a Scottsdale neighborhood Wednesday after Arizona Game and Fish Department officials received reports of an attack on a person walking his dog.

Department officials said residents have reported that coyotes in the area are becoming increasingly aggressive toward people.

A witness to the reported attack told officers that a coyote got into a fight with the dog near Thomas and Hayden roads and the owner was nipped by the coyote when he tried to intervene.

This is the first reported attack in the region.

“Coyotes that have attacked or behaved aggressively toward people are considered a threat to public safety and the agency has taken action to remove them,” the agency said in a statement.

The coyotes were removed and euthanized, and their remains were sent to a lab to be tested for rabies.

This time of year, coyotes are caring for their young, agency officials said.

“(They) may exhibit aggressive behavior in defending their dens, particularly toward domestic dogs,” the statement said. “Coyote dens are often located near communities and populated areas where there is a risk of negative interactions.”

Authorities are asking residents to keep an eye on their surroundings and keep wildlife at a distance.

To report aggressive coyote behavior in the area, call the AZGFD at 623-236-7201. In an emergency, call 911.
