Largo Police Department Introduces New Therapy K-9, Retirement

The new K-9 therapist, 1 year retired, is a paramedic who trained at Paws and Stripes College with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. It is a dog obedience program designed to help save the lives of dogs at the county animal shelter.

Pension reportedly completed 40 hours of training at the college along with his handler, Largo Police Sergeant Haley Sequeira.

The department says Pension can provide comfort and emotional support to other officers and victims of crime.

“Our officers face psychological stress and stressful situations that can impact their mental health,” Largo Police Chief Mike Loux said in a statement.

“Research has shown that therapy dogs can have a positive impact on reducing stress, anxiety and depression, as well as promoting overall well-being,” Loux said in a statement. “By adding a therapy dog to our department, we provide a source of comfort and support to officers, dispatchers and all employees, thereby promoting a more resilient and healthy workforce.”
