A crash on I-15 in Utah County killed one after hitting the muffler

AMERICAN FORK — A man was killed early Sunday after crashing head-on into a muffler on Interstate 15, authorities said.

The Department of Public Safety said Utah County troopers responded to the crash near milepost 278 at the Pioneer Crossing exit just before 1 a.m. Sunday.

According to authorities, the man was driving a white Ram 1500. For an “unknown” reason, he veered from the left lane to the right and struck the crash cushion.

The truck caught fire after the impact and was already fully engulfed in flames when emergency services arrived. After the flames were contained, the driver was removed from the vehicle.

He was flown to hospital by helicopter in life-threatening condition. Authorities said hospital staff contacted investigators and said the driver’s injuries were “not survivable.”

All northbound traffic was closed and rerouted for two hours after the accident, authorities said.

DPS did not release the driver’s name as of Sunday morning.

This is a groundbreaking story. It will be updated.
