The teenage son of a British oil executive dies in a boating accident on a Greek holiday

A British teenager on a family holiday has died in a speedboat accident off the Greek island of Paxos, according to reports.

Toby Finnett, son of Aon oil executive Paul Finnett, fell from the stern of an inflatable speedboat his father was piloting and became caught in the propeller blades.

Coast guard officials on the island of Paxos, south of Corfu, said the 15-year-old was seriously injured by the propeller.

“He died instantly. There was no chance of saving him,” an official said, according to The Times.

The boy was with his father and two brothers, ages 17 and 14, when the small boat entered choppy waters about half a mile south of the island’s port town of Gaios.

Mr Finnett, 54, is considered an experienced boatman and had rented the speedboat for a day trip.

He was “initially arrested on suspicion of negligent driving” but was released after an investigation found the accident was caused by bad weather conditions, a Greek official said.

“He (the little boy) must have slipped off the ship during the rough ride,” the official added.

The Finnett family are said to be from Littlehampton in West Sussex, but are said to live in Houston, Texas, where Mr Finnett works as a managing director for the energy company.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “Foreign Office staff are supporting the family of a British child following his death on Paxos and are in contact with Greek police about the incident.”
