FIRST WEATHER WARNING | Dry weather on the horizon

(WSAZ) – After a cold front moved through late night and early morning, much of the activity associated with the warm, muggy air mass overhead has finally moved to the east of the region. Fortunately, this will mean that there will be no more First Alert weather days in the near future. However, there will be some cool, cloudy, gray and hazy weather affecting the region on Friday. Within the clouds, we can also expect some shower activity to develop, which will be spread across the area during the afternoon hours of your Friday.

Finally, high pressure will move into the region overnight this evening, allowing clouds over the region to dissipate during this time. As the clouds clear, the “heat” pouring in from the Sun will escape the region straight back into space overnight and tonight. So we expect a slight dip into the mid and upper 40s this evening.

When you wake up tomorrow you definitely need to have the hoodies in the store. However, in the afternoon we expect temperatures to rise back into the upper 60s and lower 70s. Unfortunately, showers and storms will return to the region around midday and into the afternoon hours of Saturday. These showers and storms were expected to spread to the Portsmouth area by 11 a.m., the River Cities by midday, and the Charleston metro by afternoon. This activity should leave the region by late afternoon. Outside of this activity we should see sunny skies.

There will finally be a daytime high pressure in the region on Sunday, allowing sunshine to return to the region for Mother’s Day. Further west, northwesterly flow will keep the region fairly cool with highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. On Monday, this high pressure will expand eastward, allowing southerly winds to push warmer temperatures back into the region as highs are expected to return to the upper 70s and lower 80s.

Our next chance of rain continues Tuesday, bringing showers and storms through Wednesday (along with slightly cooler temperatures into the mid-70s). Northerly flow will bring cooler temperatures behind a cold front on Wednesday before warming up again on Thursday as a warm front advances again. There’s also a chance of a single storm developing later today, but we’re looking pretty good for most of the day on Thursday.
