Shooting investigation leads to standoff with police on South 15th; three injured

On July 21, 2024, at approximately 1:04 a.m., Springfield Police officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 2100 block of South 15th Street. Upon arrival, officers found two men who had been shot.

The victims led officers to a home and as they approached, they noticed rifle cartridges in the yard. Officers attempted to make contact, but the residents were uncooperative and barricaded the door. On-duty SPD Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Crisis Response Team (CRT) members attempted to make contact with those inside the home via a loudspeaker.

After a lengthy attempt to communicate with the residents, a person fired shots at the officers from inside the house. The shots struck an emergency vehicle that was occupied by several SPD officers. Additional shots came from the direction of the officers and again hit the emergency vehicle, whereupon an officer returned fire. The attempt to communicate resumed and a person came out of the house and reported that a person inside the house had a gunshot wound.

ERT, accompanied by a trauma physician assigned to the team, entered the apartment, secured all items and rendered aid to the injured man. He was transported to a local hospital in Springfield for treatment; his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

No officers were injured in the incident. The two victims of the shooting, who initially alerted officers to the suspect’s location, were transported to Springfield-area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. In accordance with state law and department policy, the Illinois State Police were contacted to conduct an independent investigation.

The investigation is ongoing. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
