Nigerian government plans to suspend tax on sweetened sugar drinks

The Nigerian government is considering suspending the tax on sugary drinks to ease pressure on manufacturers in the inflation-hit country.

The tax of 10 naira (US$0.0061) per litre on sweetened beverages, introduced two years ago, is intended to address health concerns.

According to reports from Nigeria, Finance Minister Wale Edun informed a meeting of the National Action on Sugar Reduction (NASR) group about plans to temporarily suspend the tax to provide relief to beverage manufacturers.

According to media outlet Business Post, Edun told NASR members that the move was aimed at helping beverage manufacturers overcome the current economic challenges without risking closure.

He further stated that “the temporary suspension of the sugar tax is seen as a measure to stabilise the economy and stimulate the beverage industry at this critical time.”
