Suspect in car chase leads police on chase with baby in car – NBC Los Angeles

A man police say was involved in a Beverly Hills robbery led authorities on a dangerous chase Wednesday with his two-month-old daughter in the car.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department said the disturbing ordeal began with a call about an armed robbery involving three men in Beverly Hills. Those men were seen driving in Hawthorne and then abandoned their car. Two men were arrested and a third suspect was seen driving away in a Kia sedan.

The third suspect, who is believed to have stolen the Kia, then began a chase with his young daughter and the baby’s mother in the vehicle. It is unclear when the two got into the car.

The driver ignored police requests to stop, weaving through traffic, driving on the wrong side of the road at times and having near misses with other motorists. The driver later entered a dead end street at the corner of Shedd Terrace and Wrightcrest Drive in Culver City, where several patrol cars blocked the suspect vehicle.

While the driver was stuck, he turned himself in to the police and handed over his young daughters to the officers. The man’s girlfriend, who was sitting in the back seat, got out and also turned herself in to the police.

“When there’s a baby involved, everything escalates and you have to do your best, and I feel like everyone did their best,” said Deputy Tony Lomedico.

A video from NewsChopper 4 shows the driver turning himself in to the police and the woman being arrested. The baby was handed over to the police and received medical treatment on site.

“My concern was the baby,” said Deputy Adriana Martinez. “She was crying, so I just wanted to comfort her. My motherly instincts kicked in and I just tried to calm her down and stop her from crying. We ended up taking care of her.”

LASD said officers fed the child and changed her diaper before she fell asleep. She was described as doing well and has since been reunited with her mother.

Officials said they released the baby’s mother from custody after determining she was the victim of a kidnapping in the incident.

The driver, whose name was not released, faces charges including kidnapping, car theft, armed robbery and possession of a firearm as a former felon. The LASD said he livestreamed the chase while driving.
