The Facts – Campaign Finance Report

July 15 was the day campaign finance reports were due to the state Board of Elections (BOE) and the Federal Election Commission (FEC). In New York, all registered committees, including those not involved in a primary election this year, were required to file. New York state candidates’ filings cover the period from mid-January 2024 through July 11; for candidates involved in last month’s primaries, the data is only for June 10. For federal candidates, the reports cover the second quarter of 2024, with the exception of Rep. Tim Kennedy, who is required to report since April 18 due to the special election in the 26th District.

These reports give an idea of ​​the situation of the electoral campaigns and the serious threat posed by the opposition.

In recent years, candidate committees have been much more efficient in submitting their reports before the BOE deadlines, but there are still some stragglers. I will update this article later in the week with any additional information that becomes available. If only one candidate is listed, this indicates that there is no opposition identified.

The new Public Campaign Financing Program (PCFP) complicates reporting this cycle. The program requires candidates who have applied to participate to close their previous committee and merge it with a new committee that will include any public funding they receive. For some candidates who have applied for public funding, full July data is not yet being reported. It seems likely that at least some candidates who have applied for public funding may receive such funding at some point, increasing their cash balances.

One candidate, Rep. Michael Norris, received $175,000 in state funds, the maximum amount for an Assembly candidate.
