70-year-old woman raped in Goalpara

Goalpara, July 14: A heinous incident took place in Assam’s Goalpara district after a 70-year-old woman was allegedly raped and murdered by a miscreant in Matia area.

According to initial information, the victim was in the pasture when an offender, naked and with his face covered with a piece of cloth, approached the elderly woman and allegedly raped her. The accused then tried to strangle her, but the victim managed to free herself from his clutches by biting her.

Following the incident, the victim, who is now psychologically traumatised, was taken to a hospital in Matia for medical examination and is expected to be referred to Goalpara for further treatment.

Meanwhile, the police have launched an investigation to catch the perpetrators of this heinous crime.

In addition, Bijuli Kalita Medhi, Member of the Lok Sabha in Guwahati, visited the scene on Sunday to take stock of the situation and directed the police to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.
