Norfolk police officer involved in Arcadia Street shooting

The shooting reportedly occurred Saturday in the 3800 block of Arcadia Street, near Ingleside Park.

NORFOLK, Virginia – Police say a police officer and a suspect were shot in Norfolk Saturday afternoon.

Norfolk Police Chief Mark Talbot said officers were called to the 3800 block of Arcadia Street around 3:15 p.m. to assist with a Child Protective Services emergency call.

According to Talbot, arriving officers were met almost immediately by a woman who was “combative.” While police were trying to get the situation under control, Talbot said a man came out of a house and opened fire on officers.

Police returned fire, hitting the man multiple times. Talbot said an officer was also shot multiple times during the exchange of gunfire.

Both the officer and the suspect were taken to the hospital. Talbot said the officer is in good condition, while the suspect is in critical condition.

Talbot did not provide details about the call to CPS that led police to the Arcadia Street address, but said the child involved is safe and there is no major threat to the community.

Norfolk’s chief prosecutor, Ramin Fatehi, also arrived at the scene of the shooting on Saturday and urged the public not to shoot at police.

“People need to stop shooting at police,” Fatehi said. “I don’t say it bluntly, but it’s that simple.” He later added: “It never ends well and people need to think twice and not do it.”

The Virginia State Police were called to investigate the police shooting.
