Lexington Police Department recruits for next class of 2025

LEXINGTON, Kentucky (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – If you’ve ever thought about a job in the police force, you’ve come to the right place: The Lexington Police Department is currently recruiting for the next class of its academy.

“Being part of the police force for over 30 years is a unique experience,” says Police Chief Lawrence Weathers, looking back on his career.

“We’re looking for someone who wants to represent their city, someone who maybe works in the commercial service sector and has been involved in their community for a number of years. Maybe they were born and raised here or just work as a bartender,” said SGT. Guy Miller says there’s a great sense of pride in being born and raised in Lexington and becoming part of the LPD.

“When we all come together in this close-knit community, especially when you’re a new recruit in the recruit academy and you encounter a variety of different cultures in that class, it creates a close-knit community and you learn the ins and outs of certain cultures,” Miller added.

He added that you develop a bond with one another during the class. “It’s something you don’t expect, but when you go through this recruit course, you form bonds that you can’t form anywhere else,” Miller said.

According to Police Chief Lawrence Weathers, “We are at the forefront of community policing. We started doing it in the ’90s and we do things that others don’t do. We get to know people by their first names in the police department where we work, when we see them on the street, say ‘hi’ and start a conversation with them that has absolutely nothing to do with policing.”

In addition, the department attaches great importance to being approachable and transparent in the community.

“You don’t sit back and wait to see what other people do. That means you see something, do something about it, go out and make something happen,” Chief Weathers said.

Miller adds that if you’re thinking about joining the force, you might consider coming along.

“We also offer prep classes. There’s one on August 1st at 6 p.m. at our training academy. Sign up and try it out. The class is free. The recruiter and some people from the training staff will be there and teach you all about the police. There’s also the Citizens Police Academy. If you’re thinking about it, go to the Citizens Police Academy,” Miller said.

The starting salary for civil servants is almost $62,000.
In addition, there is a comprehensive service package.
