Ride at fair in Dobbs Ferry partially derailed

Amusement rides at an Independence Day celebration in Dobbs Ferry were shut down after one of them partially derailed, police said. It happened Thursday night in Waterfront Park.

It happened around 4:15 p.m. when police from the Dobbs Ferry Police Department received a report that a children’s roller coaster had gone off track.

Aaron Sahr was sitting right next to the ride when it happened.

“The whole track slipped off the wooden blocks, it started to tip over and a group of people, including me, rushed over and held it upright,” says Sahr.

Sahr says that as they were helping to keep the train going, the power was cut off. Then they helped all the riders get off.

According to police, no one was seriously injured.

“You hear that things like this happen, but you never believe that you will ever experience something like this,” says Sahr.

Police told News 12 they recommended shutting down all rides pending inspection.

The whole incident caused a moment of panic and confusion among some families who witnessed it all.

“It felt like everything was falling over, like in slow motion. A whole bunch of people ran over and literally stopped the train. They were right there and kind of saved the day,” said Amy Shapiro-Kessler, a resident of Dobbs Ferry.

News 12 is still waiting for a response from the ride operator about what will happen next.

A fireworks display was planned in the park for around 9 p.m.
