Impeachment proceedings against speaker fail: Imo assembly suspends four MPs

In a tense atmosphere, the Imo State House of Assembly yesterday suspended four of its members for unparliamentary conduct.

The four MPs, who were suspended indefinitely, were also accused of plotting to oust the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Honourable Chike Olemgbe, from office.

Three of the affected MPs are in their second term and the fourth is in office for the first time. The suspended MPs are Honourable Dominic Ezerioha (Oru-West), Honourable Sam Nkemere Otuibe (Ahiazu Mbaise), Honourable Samuel Ogbunikpa (Okigwe) and Honourable Henry Agbasonu (Ezinihitte Mbaise).

Announcing the suspension of the four members during the plenary session on Tuesday, the Speaker stated that the four members, who are chairpersons of various standing committees of the House, were determined to disrupt the smooth conduct of legislative activity by plotting to overthrow the leadership of the House in its present constitution.

Olemgbe announced the impeachment of Samuel Ogbunikpa, who was Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives before his indefinite suspension. Suspended Deputy Leader and MP for Ezinihitte, Henry Agbasonu, was also impeached.
