Héctor Herrera named to 2024 MLS All-Star team

HOUSTON (July 1, 2024) – Houston Dynamo FC captain Héctor Herrera was named to the list for the 2024 MLS All-Star Gamethe league announced today. The MLS All-Stars will face a team of LIGA MX All-Stars on July 24 in Columbus, Ohio. Dynamo fans can watch the match on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

“Although each player selected for the All-Star Game is deserved based on their talent, some players mean more to their club than the contributions made on the field,” said the Dynamo general manager. Pat Onstad “Over the past two seasons, Héctor has helped this club regain a level of competitiveness that Houston has not seen in some time. That is why we are thrilled that Héctor will once again have the immense honor of representing Houston and the Dynamo in a world-class event against exciting players from LIGA MX where he began his career.”

The midfielder is one of two players selected by MLS Commissioner Don Garber, along with Columbus Crew’s Darlington Nagbe. This will be Herrera’s second consecutive All-Star appearance after representing Houston in last year’s match against Premier League side Arsenal FC. The Mexico international also represented the Dynamo in the 2022 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge. He joined the team in July after the secondary transfer window and was ineligible to play in the All-Star Game.

Herrera made his season debut at Shell Energy Stadium on April 20 against in-state rivals Austin FC after returning from a knee injury that sidelined him for the early part of the season. Since then, he has played 13 matches and started 10 times (897 minutes), while scoring one goal and recording two assists.

Master of Houston’s midfield, Herrera leads the team with 92.2 percent passing success (at least 300 attempts), helping Houston control games and dictate the pace of play by leading the Western Conference with 58 % of ball possession over the entire season. The Dynamo captain’s contributions on defense also helped Houston lead the Western Conference in goals conceded this season.

Herrera was named to MLSSoccer.com’s Team of the Match twice this season for his performances against Sporting Kansas City on May 11 and the Portland Timbers on June 1.

Herrera’s Dynamo team has competed above the MLS playoff line since the start of the 2024 season and looks to replicate last year’s strong campaign under head coach Ben Olsenwhich saw the team win the 2023 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup and advance to the Western Conference Finals in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
