Ncuti Gatwa says he “never disclosed” his sexuality

Doctor Who Star Ncuti Gatwa commented on the debate surrounding his sexuality and said that contrary to what many people think, he has “never lived in secret”.

The Sex education Star, 31, initially identified as queer in an interview with Elle Earlier this year, there had been years of speculation on the internet about his debut as Eric Effiong in the Netflix series.

Gatwa has always avoided revealing his identity publicly, and the Elle interview was the clearest hint he has given yet.

“It’s a very privileged position. To think that sexuality is so simple.”

In a recent interview with GQ For the Men of the Year issue, Gatwa continued to identify as queer, realizing that not being public about his sexuality was “more complicated” than he wanted to be.

Of the Elle interview, Gatwa said: “It felt right in the moment.” He then added: “I never had to pretend. I just never talked about it. The work I do is what matters.”

The Elle interview followed Gatwa’s appearance in British Vogue’s Pride issue, in which he appeared nude and did not disclose his sexuality, despite many feeling they had a right to do so.

“I am aware of the confusion this has caused, but I thought my participation would be a statement,” Gatwa said. “I didn’t mean to offend anyone, but I thought two plus two is four. I couldn’t be louder. I literally stripped naked.”

He then explained that he didn’t need to label himself for anyone else and criticized people for thinking the decision was easy.

“If you think it’s that simple, I’m happy for you. That’s a very privileged position to be in. To think that sexuality is that simple, and that it’s that simple to talk about sexuality and live with your sexuality. I’m so glad you think it’s that simple, because the world isn’t like that.”

“I couldn’t walk through this club without being grabbed at every corner and end”

Gatwa also spoke about moving to Glasgow for drama school. Here he was introduced to the Scottish city’s gay scene, handing out flyers for gay club The Polo Lounge. “I flirted with all the boys!” the actor recalled, adding that he later became a shotboy and go-go dancer.

He recalled his first night in Glasgow and said he would “never forget” it.

Gatwa explained that as a black man in a predominantly white and gay environment, he was “deeply sexualized” and could not understand why.

“I couldn’t walk through that club without being grabbed from all over. It was weird – but funny! Very funny!”
