Travel chaos as Edinburgh Airport suspends flights due to ‘broken runway’

Passengers are facing travel chaos after Edinburgh Airport suspended flights due to runway problems.

Edinburgh Airport suspended services on Thursday morning while its teams carried out repairs to a “minor glitch” on the runway.

FlightRadar showed that several flights from airlines including Ryanair, EasyJet, Jet2, Air Canada, British Airways and Qatar Airways were queued as they waited for clearance to take off.

The airport said the runway is nearing the end of its life and a full replacement is planned for next year.

An Edinburgh Airport spokesman said: “Arrivals and departures were suspended as teams carried out repairs to a minor fault.

“The runway is nearing the end of its life and a full replacement is planned for next year.

“We always put safety first, we maintain a regular maintenance program and will continue to carry out work wherever and whenever required.”
