Sheriff: Owner of martial arts school arrested for alleged sexual assault of student

SAN ANTONIO – The owner and teacher of a martial arts school was arrested Saturday for allegedly sexually abusing a 14-year-old student, according to Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar.

Salazar said a student at the school called “The Exception Squad” at 7616 Culebra Road began receiving messages from Joseph Rene Caballero in which he acted “grooming-like” and acted like a secret admirer.

A relationship developed between the student and Caballero, during which Caballero sexually abused her, Salazar said.

The student informed a family member about Caballero’s alleged actions, and an investigation was launched, Salazar said.

Caballero, 40, was taken into custody and charged with sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony.

Salazar believes that the martial arts school owned by Caballero is still in operation and that there may be more victims.

Online court records show Caballero was released from jail on $75,000 bail.
