Heavy rain, flood warning issued for Springdale and national park areas – St George News

SPRINGDALE — The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for eastern Washington County and Zion National Park for Sunday evening.

Due to excessive rainfall, flooding is expected in both urban areas and small rivers, the weather forecast said.

Minor flooding is expected in low-lying areas around Springdale and Zion National Park. Some areas have poor drainage and there is a possibility of flooding of certain roads.

“Doppler radar has indicated heavy rainfall due to thunderstorms,” ​​the National Weather Service warning said. “This is causing urban and small river flooding, as seen on SR-9 in Springdale near Quail Ridge Road.”

As of 5:24 p.m., rainfall amounts between 0.5 and 1.5 inches were reported. The weather service is warning drivers to be prepared for the unexpected.

“Turn back, don’t drown,” the warning said. “On flooded roads, most deaths from flooding occur in vehicles.”

It is important to know where you are in relation to streams, rivers or creeks, which can be deadly in heavy rain. Campers and hikers should avoid streams, creeks and canyons.
