Taylor Wily, the first fighter to step into the Octagon during a broadcast that became a popular actor, has died at the age of 56. Wily had only one professional MMA fight, entering UFC 1 because of his sumo past. But that one fight proved to be one of the most memorable in the promotion’s history.

This fight may have been as important as any on the show, but it didn’t go well for Wily. Gerard Gordeau knocked him out in less than 30 seconds in the opening round of the tournament by delivering a head kick that made for an iconic moment when three of Wily’s teeth were knocked out, one of which visibly flew toward the crowd and two reportedly became lodged in Gordeau’s foot.

As the first UFC fight for the masses – there had been an alternate fight in the tournament before the show aired – it immediately set a shocking tone and established MMA as something completely different from boxing.

After his boxing career quickly came to an end, Wily started a successful career as an actor.

While Wily’s best known role is probably that of the likable Kemo in “Forget About Your Ex” alongside Jason Segel, Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis, he has also had important recurring roles in “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum PI.”
