KCK Police: After recent cyber attack, files disappeared in the Darknet

KANSAS CITY, Kansas – A cyberattack that took the Kansas City, Kansas, police and fire department networks offline is still having significant impact.

This while FOX4 learns more about the extent of this attack.

A source who examined the file names leaked in this dump released by these cybercriminals says it appears that the majority of files stored by police and fire departments in KCK have been compromised.

And this comes one day after the police in KCK admitted that the data leaked by these cyber criminals actually belonged to them.

FOX4 has learned that the leak is more extensive and damaging than originally thought.

“This should be very concerning to everyone – because this is not something we wanted, not something we asked for, and it is an undue burden on our resources to have to deal with these issues,” KCK Mayor Tyrone Garner told FOX4.

“This is a known threat actor. Black Suit has set up a website or a dark web site where they list their alleged IT victims and their files,” said Tanner Shinn, senior engineer at Alias Cybersecurity.

The file names contained in this leak, sent to FOX4 by a source, include information such as open investigations, training information, bank records, personnel files, compliance reports and more, all of which have been published and are now available on the dark web.

While members of the public who have had dealings with either department are advised to contact their respective agencies, our cyber expert believes there is one group that should be particularly concerned.

“I would imagine the people who should be most concerned are the employees directly affected,” Shinn said.

Although the consequences of this development will undoubtedly last for weeks and months, the mayor said on Wednesday that the people of the city are safe.

“Their services have not been reduced, police officers are still responding when you call them, our fire and rescue personnel are still responding when you call them,” Garner said.

FOX4 was unable to access these files independently for legal reasons, but the site is believed to be home to people with bad intentions. According to our expert, the level of concern there is likely to be very high.
