MLB Sports Betting Concerns: Shohei Ohtani Incident

Does anyone bet on baseball?

As sports betting continues to gain momentum, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has expressed the league’s position regarding this evolving landscape.

Recent MLB news scandals, including the interpreter Shohei Ohtani incident, have sparked discussions about the integrity of sports betting and its impact on leagues and teams.

Manfred addressed these concerns during the 2024 Associated Press Sports Editors Commissioners Meetings, emphasizing MLB’s commitment to maintaining integrity while managing the complexities of sports gambling.

Prop bets and integrity risks

One point of contention highlighted by Manfred is prop betting, which allows fans to bet online on individual outcomes in specific events, such as a bat in baseball.

While these bets enhance the fan experience, they also pose integrity risks, particularly if players could be tricked into intentionally influencing the results.

“We were on prop bets from the beginning,” Manfred said, as CBS Sports reported. “When we lobby states, there are always certain types of bets that we have lobbied against. I mean, we really don’t want to make the first pitch of the game available as a side bet.”

Despite the challenges posed by sports betting, Manfred reiterated MLB’s commitment to maintaining integrity through rigorous monitoring and compliance measures.

The league employs a dedicated integrity and compliance team tasked with monitoring MLB games and gambling activities and identifying any irregularities that could jeopardize the integrity of the sport.

To prevent conflicts of interest and protect the integrity of the game, players are prohibited from betting on Diamond sports, including baseball.

While incidents such as the University of Alabama baseball scandal raised concerns, Manfred emphasized the effectiveness of MLB’s integrity system in identifying and combating suspicious gambling activity.

MLB wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about legal betting

The betting news has covered the problems and scandals that legal betting has spawned, but the baseball commissioner sees a silver lining in legal sports betting.

Legalization allows for more control and makes things fairer. However, it seems that baseball wasn’t exactly excited about jumping on the sports betting bandwagon. Manfred himself joked that they were dragged into the matter through a court case!

“We kind of got dragged into legalized sports betting as a litigant in a case that ended up in the Supreme Court,” he said with a laugh.

“We are in this world and you can argue from an integrity perspective that we are in a better position,” he added.
