At least 9 shots fired at Splash Park in Rochester Hills, Michigan, according to police

A gunman opened fire at a water park in Michigan on Saturday in what authorities said was a random attack that injured at least nine people, including a child, police said.

The shooting occurred at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, authorities said.

“It appears to be a random active shooter,” Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said at a news conference.

“It appears the individual stopped, exited a vehicle, approached the water, opened fire, reloaded, opened fire, reloaded and left,” he said.

Officials said they had “detained” the shooter in a nearby home.

The victims were taken to several hospitals, but their conditions are unknown, Sheriff Bouchard said, adding that at least one of them is an 8-year-old child.

Rochester Hills is located about 25 miles north of Detroit and is home to about 76,000 people.

Images shared on social media showed a crowd of police and paramedics surrounding a park. Officers could be seen tending to a person on the wet floor of a splash pad – a children’s play area equipped with nozzles that spray water – while officers escorted passersby away.
