Up to 10 people were injured after a shooting at a municipal water park near Detroit. Police said the incident occurred Saturday in the Rochester Hills suburb as families frolicked in the water to escape the heat.

“It sounds like we have nine, maybe 10 victims with gunshot wounds, victims with various types of injuries,” Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard told reporters.

In a conversation with the media, the authorities also announced that a pistol and three empty magazines had been seized. The possible suspect in the incident is said to have hidden in a house nearby.

“So, preliminarily, it looks like the suspect may have fired 28 shots and reloaded multiple times,” Bouchard said. Authorities urged people to avoid the area as it is still an active crime scene.

Facts under investigation

Officials have not yet released any further information on this case and the condition of the victims remains unclear. Police noted that a man exited the vehicle outside the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad Park at around 5:00 p.m. (local time).

He fired several shots from a semi-automatic 9mm Glock and reloaded several times, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said at a news conference. Reuters reported.

“This is obviously a gut punch for us here in Oakland County,” Bouchard said. “We have seen so much tragedy. We can’t even fully comprehend what happened in Oxford.”

Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer also expressed her dissatisfaction with the tragic incident on X, formerly Twitter. “I am deeply saddened to learn of the shooting in Rochester Hills,” she wrote. “We are monitoring the situation as updates continue to come in and are in contact with local authorities,” the Michigan governor added.

Rochester Hills is located about 50 km north of Detroit. The neighboring community of Oxford Township, also in Oakland County, was the victim of a school shooting in 2021.

A then 15-year-old student named Ethan Crumbley killed four students and injured six others and a teacher at Oxford High School.
