KOTA KINABALU: A farm worker has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 strokes of a rotan for raping his stepdaughter in Sandakan district for the past three years.

The 39-year-old Indonesian pleaded guilty to the crime before Judge Zaini Fishir on Wednesday (June 12).

According to the facts of the case, the accused had repeatedly raped the girl, also an Indonesian, since she was 11 years old. She is now 14 years old.

She told her great uncle, her mother and her uncle about the rapes on May 28 at around 8 p.m.

The great-uncle reported the incident to the police the following day, whereupon the accused was arrested.

He admitted to last raping the girl around noon on May 5 while they were collecting oil palm fruits on the estate.

The investigation revealed that he threatened to kill her mother and siblings if she told anyone about the rape.

Following the report, the girl was taken for a medical examination and tears in her intimate area were discovered.

It was announced that the defendant will be referred to immigration authorities for further processing after serving his prison sentence.

DPP Bryan Francis led the prosecution while the accused was unrepresented.
