Czech midfielder Michal Sadilek to miss Euro 2024 after bicycle accident

Czech midfielder Michal Sadilek is the latest victim to miss out on Euro 2024 due to an injury sustained during an activity that has nothing to do with football.

The 24-time international, who plays for FC Twente in the Netherlands, was cycling on Friday as part of an individual training program after a friendly match when he apparently fell and suffered a serious cut on his leg.

After a medical examination, the national team decided that he could not take part in the upcoming tournament and issued a statement saying that he would leave the group – after wearing the captain’s armband in the victory over Malta just a day earlier.

“Unfortunately, Sadilek fell while cycling and suffered a laceration on his leg,” a spokesman for the Czech Republic said on Sunday.

“This is a big setback for us because Michal is one of our most experienced players,” said coach Ivan Hasek. “It was not without reason that he wore the captain’s armband in the game against Malta.”

“On behalf of the entire team, I wish him a speedy recovery.”

Sadilek, who spent four years with PSV before eventually moving to Twente, was in the Czech squad for the postponed 2020 Euro finals and scored one goal for the senior team. No replacement has yet been named to take his place.

“We will decide in the near future whether we will call someone else,” Hasek added.

The Czech Republic will face Turkey, Georgia and Portugal in Group F. Their first match will be against Portugal on 18 June.
