Former police officer and rape accused released on bail

A former police officer who allegedly raped a 26-year-old woman at the Valelevu police single men’s barracks has been released on $1,000 bail by the High Court in Suva.

Kolinio Naturaga appeared before Judge Dane Tuiqereqere on charges of rape.

Prosecutor Simone Seruvatu asked the court for a period of 14 days to submit information and disclosures.

Mr Seruvatu said the former policeman’s bail application was made on June 5.

Prosecutor Livai Tuivuya had no objections to the securities provided to the court.

The sureties were each required to pay a sum of $1,000 in kind and were reminded of their obligations to the court.

On 30 May, Nasinu Magistrate Charles Ratakele referred the case to the Supreme Court.

The state is required to submit information and disclosures by June 20.

The case was adjourned until July 4.
