Denver police prepare for increased violence this summer

DENVER (KDVR) — High temperatures are not only uncomfortable, they can also be dangerous. Denver officials are preparing for a turbulent season of weather as summer approaches.

“I think in the summer, when the weather is warmer and kids are out of school, sometimes violence increases,” said Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas. “We prepare for this every year.”

Thomas said reducing gun crime and auto theft is a top priority.

There will be an increased presence of uniformed patrol officers at the city’s violent hotspots this summer.

“We’ve really increased our resources in the downtown area, especially on the weekends, so be prepared for things like this,” Thomas said.

In addition, there will be partnerships with local and state authorities to combat dangerous street racing and shootings.

“We are pursuing a strategy that relies on recognition rather than strict enforcement of communities, but rather on greater engagement and investment,” said Thomas.

Denver police focus on reducing youth violence

Thomas also has a plan to curb youth violence this summer.

“We have a really good relationship with the Department of Children’s Affairs,” Thomas said. “We know that youth violence is a big problem, especially during the summer months when kids are active. We just need to find healthy activities for the youth. We need to identify kids who are having problems, point them in the right direction and make connections with them and the city agencies and the community partners who can really help.”

According to Colorado state crime statistics, Denver police have responded to nearly 800 firearm-related incidents and about 460 dangerous weapon calls so far this year.

“I think we all want to be safe this summer, so please be careful yourself. If you see any behavior that you think is unsafe, please report it to us so we can respond,” Thomas said.

Thomas said another issue his officers are focusing on is house parties, which can turn violent. He said if you see a party getting out of control, call them at 720-913-1311.
