What you should know about examinations

Two people were hospitalized Wednesday after a shootout with police at a Kroger grocery store in Colerain Township.

Although little information has been released so far, here’s everything you need to know about the ongoing investigation into the shooting.

What triggered the shooting?

Colerain Township officers were in the middle of an investigation at the Kroger on Springdale Road just before 4 p.m., the department said in a news release Thursday. Colerain Police Department Public Information Officer James Love had told the Enquirer earlier Wednesday that the investigation was conducted in response to a report of “gunshots.”

As police approached the suspect, he pulled out a gun and pointed it at officers, officials said. A shootout ensued and the suspect retreated into the store.

The suspect and officers continued to exchange gunfire inside the store, with the suspect eventually being shot and taken into custody. A bystander was also struck during the shootout.

What is the condition of the injured?

Both the suspect and the bystander were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Although police had no information on their condition as of Thursday afternoon, they said both were expected to survive. The officers involved were not injured.

How did Kroger respond?

“We are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred at our Kroger Colerain Marketplace store at 3636 Springdale Road,” a Kroger spokesperson wrote in a statement to Enquirer media partner Fox19. “We are working with local law enforcement who have secured the store and parking lot. The store remains closed while the police investigation continues, and we have initiated counseling services for our associates.”

What is the status of the investigation?

The officers who exchanged fire with the suspect were placed on leave in accordance with department policy.

Colerain Township police have asked the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to independently investigate the incident, officials said.

“We will release further information as it becomes available, but would like to stress that a thorough investigation takes time and we want to ensure that only accurate information is released,” the ministry said in a press release.
