British Airways is ‘contacting affected customers’ after flights were suspended

British Airways will axe a brand new route less than a year after it was launched, the company has announced. The British Airways route between London Heathrow and Belgrade resumed last October after a 13-year hiatus, but will now axe the route – after less than a year of operation.

British Airways told EX-YU Aviation News: “We regularly review our schedule and, for commercial reasons, have made the difficult decision to suspend our flights to Belgrade from 29 September 2024. We are contacting affected customers to apologise and offer them alternative options, including rebooking or a full refund.”

According to Aviation 24, the airline is exploring the possibility of resuming flights between the two cities next summer. After launching the new route last year, BA said: “British Airways will launch a three times weekly service from London Heathrow from 31 October 2023.”

“Flights will be operated using a mix of A320 and A321 aircraft, with return fares available from £105 or £1 + 23,500 Avios. Located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, Eastern European Belgrade attracts visitors with its fascinating history, exciting nightlife and vibrant bohemian quarter of Skadarlija.

Neil Chernoff, Director of Network and Alliances at British Airways, said: “We are delighted to add the European cities of Riga, Belgrade and Cologne to our network. We know our customers will love these destinations as they provide an alternative to some of the more popular cities we fly to. We also know that Italy in particular is very popular with our customers, so we look forward to increasing capacity with flights to Milan and Turin and expanding choice across Europe.”

It was also announced that a 12-times-weekly service from London Heathrow will be available from 30 October 2023. Flights will be operated with A320 and A321 aircraft, with return fares available from £92 or £1 + 18,500 Avios.
