Victims of boat accident in Verőce found far from crash site

The body of the sixth victim of a boating accident that occurred last weekend on the Danube near Verőce has been recovered, police said on Facebook on Sunday.

The man’s body was discovered near Szigetújfalu (on the island of Csepel), the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) announced. In the accident, the victims’ boat collided with a cruise ship. One of the boat’s eight passengers managed to swim to shore, six died and one is still missing.

The cruise ship’s captain, a Czech citizen, was arrested for failing to render assistance to the boat after the collision. An investigation found that the boat’s helmsman was drunk and the boat zigzagged across the river and directly toward the ship. Before hitting the ship, the boat made a sharp turn, but a collision could not be avoided and the ship crushed the much smaller vessel, police said.
