Houston Food Bank Hosts Event on Benefits of SNAP Replacement

HOUSTON (KIAH) – The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as SNAP or food stamps, provides a monthly food allowance to low-income families. This program is the largest in the country, benefiting around 38 million people, or 12% of the population.

Texas is one of the states with the highest number of households using the program, at more than 1 million. Texas Health and Human Services reported that more than 200,000 Harris County residents enrolled in the program in April alone.

With the recent storms hitting the Houston area, many residents are recovering from the aftermath. The Houston Food Bank is here to help those affected by the storms by hosting a SNAP replacement benefits event. Houston residents can stop by and get information about resources offered by the food bank and apply for a replacement SNAP. Participants can also apply for other federal assistance programs, such as Medicaid and CHIP, and get referrals for utility, rental or housing assistance.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents requesting assistance must bring the following:

  • IDENTIFIER
  • Social Security
  • Proof of income (last 3 months)
  • Proof of residency (you must prove you are from Texas to be eligible)
  • Evidence of housing cost
  • Immigration documents (if applicable)
  • File number (if applicable)
