An immigrant accused of raping a disabled girl at a Massachusetts shelter has been charged

A migrant accused of raping a disabled girl at a local animal shelter has been charged, according to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

The rape case of a migrant child involving 26-year-old Cory Alvarez has sparked a congressional investigation and led to further Republican-fueled criticism of Massachusetts’ shelter system.

Alvarez, a citizen of Haiti, is accused of raping a 15-year-old disabled girl at a state shelter in Rockland. He has now been indicted by a Plymouth County grand jury on charges related to the alleged child rape at the shelter, the DA’s office said Tuesday.

He was charged with one count of aggravated rape of a child with a 10-year age difference and one count of forcible rape of a child.

Rockland police responded to the Comfort Inn on Hingham Street on March 13 for a report of a sexual assault.

Upon arrival, police officers encountered the 15-year-old alleged victim, who was taken to South Shore Hospital for treatment.

Rockland police identified Alvarez as a suspect during their investigation and took him into custody.

Alvarez, who entered the U.S. legally through a federal program and underwent two state sex offender background checks, was declared dangerous in March. He remains jailed without bail.
