Michelle Branch and Patrick Carney have decided to work on their marriage.

In documents filed Tuesday in Tennessee and obtained by PEOPLE, a judge approved the couple’s request to suspend divorce proceedings for six months, during which time they can undergo counseling. At the end of the six months, they decide whether they want to continue or abort their divorce.

“As evidenced by the signatures below, the parties in this case, Michelle Jacquet Branch and Patrick James Carney, are seeking a stay of the divorce proceedings in order to effect a reconciliation,” the documents state. “The parties may participate in counseling services to bring about reconciliation and/or may resume living together as husband and wife, and their actions and conduct thereby do not constitute condonation of any prior wrongdoing and any acts or conduct of the parties prior to reconciliation. “The registration of this decision remains in effect and constitutes grounds for divorce.”

The dispute began after Branch, 39, tweeted and then deleted a note on August 10 accusing Carney, 42, of cheating on her while she was home with their young daughter.

The next morning, the “Everywhere” singer was arrested for allegedly punching her rocker husband in the face at the couple’s Nashville home.

Branch was taken into custody around 2 a.m. on August 11 and charged with domestic violence and released on $1,000 bail, the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE. She was scheduled to appear in court on November 7.

Then, on August 12, Branch filed for divorce from the Black Keys drummer, whom she married in 2019.

“To say I’m completely devastated doesn’t begin to describe how I feel about myself and my family. The ground has been completely pulled out from under me and now I have to figure out how to move on,” she said in a statement at the time. “With such young children, I ask for privacy and kindness.”

The charges against Branch were later dropped on August 24.

In her divorce filing, Branch cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the separation, and the documents state that “the parties are no longer capable of resuming their marital relationship and living together as husband and wife.”

The star also requested to be named primary parent of the couple’s son Rhys James, 4, and daughter Willie Jacquet, 7 months, and requested that Carney be given “appropriate parenting time privileges” while also paying child support.
