2 Congress MPs from Indore suspended after welcoming BJP member Vijayvargiya with sweets and garlands at party office | India News

The Congress has suspended two party leaders from Indore after it was revealed that they had greeted Madhya Pradesh Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya of the BJP with sweets and flower garlands during his visit to the city earlier this month.

Vijayvargiya is considered one of the main architects behind the resignation of Akshay Bamwho was the party’s candidate in Indore in the recent Lok Sabha election. The Congress party ultimately had no one on the ballot paper in this constituency.

On July 12, several senior Indore Congress politicians, including the two suspended Surjeet Chaddha and Sadashiv Yadav, welcomed Vijayvargiya and other BJP politicians at the Congress district office.

Vijayvargiya had gone to the Congress office to seek the party’s support in his appeal to the people of Indore to plant 51 lakh saplings in the city. He was welcomed with garlands and sweets at the party office, Congress leaders said.

“Was the manner in which Vijayvargiya removed our Lok Sabha candidate respectful? Why was the leader who removed our candidate given such a warm welcome? It has not even been two months since the incident. The party office is not a place for such private functions. You could have met him at his home on private occasions,” Congress spokesperson Mukesh Nayak told The Indian Express on Monday.

Festive offer

He said Surjeet Chaddha, the party’s acting district unit president, and Sadashiv Yadav, the Indore Congress’s rural unit president, had been served notices on the incident and would be suspended pending a decision on their responses.

Chaddha and Yadav told The Indian Express that they had submitted their replies and were awaiting the party’s decision. Chaddha said the reception was a “political courtesy”.

In the letter suspending the two Congress leaders, Rajeev Singh, the party’s state vice president (organisation), said, “A person (Vijayvargiya) who murdered democratic values in Mother Ahilya town and disenfranchised the people of Indore, thereby bringing shame to Indore at home and abroad, has also been condemned by the people of Indore. The hosting of such a person in the Gandhi Bhavan of the Indore District Congress Committee falls under the category of indiscipline.”

On the reasons behind the event, Chaddha told The Indian Express, “If someone comes to your house, don’t you welcome them? It was a political courtesy. I was in my office when Vijayvargiya called me and wanted to meet me. I said I would send someone else and he insisted on meeting me personally. If Jyotiraditya Scindia defects and brings down the government and senior politicians still meet him, then what have I done wrong?”

“Many congressional staffers were present at the event. I do not believe I committed a crime. If I am complicit, then so are these staffers. I accept all consequences,” he said.

He also said that they did not attend the BJP’s later event.
