The Most Accident-Prone Electric Vehicles in the US: Revealed

July 29, 2024 (Investorideas.com Newswire) Levine and Wiss’ study analyzed the number of most commonly searched electric vehicles involved in fatal crashes, as well as the units of each model sold during those years. It then calculated the crash rate per 10,000 cars sold to identify the electric vehicles with the highest crash rate.

The Lucid Air tops the list of most accident-prone electric vehicles, with an alarming accident rate of 51.95 per 10,000 vehicles. With only one fatal accident but a very low number of units sold (1,949), its accident rate is disproportionately high. This model also has a significant average monthly search volume of 1,116,300, indicating a high level of public interest despite its high accident rate.

The Volkswagen ID.4 ranks second with an accident rate of 15.55 per 10,000 vehicles. With two fatal accidents and 37,253 units sold, the ID.4’s accident rate is notable. The average monthly search is 392,010, reflecting a growing interest in this model.

With an accident rate of 12.5 per 10,000 vehicles, the Mazda MX-30 has had two fatal accidents and only 385 units sold, putting it third on the list. Despite its lower sales volume, the MX-30’s accident rate is significant, and it is searched for an average of 43,500 times per month.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an accident rate of 5.13 per 10,000 vehicles, with 36 fatal accidents in 23,135 units sold. This model is popular, with an average of 968,790 searches per month, and its higher accident rate reflects its increasing presence on the roads.

While the Tesla Model 3 has the highest number of fatal accidents (147 in total), it has an accident rate of 4.87 per 10,000 vehicles due to its high sales volume of 825,225 units. This model is the most searched electric vehicle with an average of 10,388,030 searches per month, indicating its popularity.

With 69 fatal accidents and 166,705 units sold, the Tesla Model S has an accident rate of 4.3 per 10,000 vehicles. It remains a commonly searched model, with an average of 2,675,800 searches per month.

The Tesla Model Y has an accident rate of 4.14 per 10,000 vehicles, including 49 fatal accidents, ranking seventh on the list. Its high sales volume helps lower its accident rate compared to other Tesla models. This model has an average of 5,430,100 searches per month.

The Hyundai Kona Electric has an accident rate of 4.13 per 10,000 vehicles and is the eighth most accident-prone electric vehicle. Despite only two fatal accidents, it has a lower accident rate due to its significant sales volume of 350,270 units. The average monthly search volume is 250,040.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is ninth on the list. It has an accident rate of 2.83 per 10,000 vehicles, with 21 fatal accidents in the last five years. Its relatively higher sales volume reduces its accident rate, attracting an average of 1,494,710 searches per month.

The Nissan Leaf completes the top ten with an accident rate of 2.49 per 10,000 vehicles, 26 fatal accidents and 62,902 units sold. It is searched for an average of 334,860 times per month.

A lawyer at Levine & Wiss who specializes in auto accidents commented on the study: “We have represented numerous clients involved in accidents involving electric vehicles, and the results of the study are consistent with our experience on the ground, particularly in New York. The increase in accidents involving models like the Lucid Air is not just a statistic, but a reality we face every day. These vehicles introduce new factors into accident scenarios, such as quieter engines and faster acceleration, that drivers may not anticipate. Our legal approaches and safety regulations must evolve to keep pace with technological changes.”
