Teenager killed in bicycle accident in Merced

MERCED, Calif. (KFSN) – A family is mourning after a teenager was killed in a car crash in Merced last Thursday night.

The accident occurred shortly before 9 p.m. in the area of East 21st Street and Calimyrna.

According to Merced police, a 15-year-old boy riding a bicycle was killed in a collision with a car.

Sam Scheidt lives nearby and says the busy thoroughfare can be dangerous.

“It’s a little darker on that street, so it’s hard to see pedestrians crossing the street or riding bikes or anything like that. So if you’re not paying close attention, or even if you’re paying attention, you might see a bike sneak away in front of you. It’s dark,” said Merced resident Sam Scheidt.

Scheidt says another tragedy occurred just ten months ago.

“Just a few blocks away, at the corner of Glenn and East 21st, an accident occurred,” Scheidt said.

According to authorities, a driver missed a red light and collided with a car.

A 19-year-old man was killed in the accident.

Now the residents are hoping for change.

“After talking to community members in this area, I think one thing that could be more lighting and possibly speed bumps,” Scheidt said.

According to police, neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to be involved in this accident and the driver remained at the scene of the accident.

“I can only imagine what she must be going through,” said Michael Domingue, deputy with the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation and says it is a heartbreaking situation overall.

“It is unfortunate that a family has to deal with the loss of a human life. And that an individual has to endure an accident in which a life was lost,” said Deputy Domingue.
