Weather warning day due to possible flooding

Monday, July 22nd, has been declared “Weather Alert Day” by the 13News Now weather team.

NORFOLK, Virginia – A flood warning is in effect for most of the 13News Now coverage area from 8 a.m. today through Monday evening.

We are on the warm and moist side of a stalled frontal boundary just north of the region.

With moist air and a disturbance moving from the Tennessee River Valley into the Mid-Atlantic region, we are likely to see numerous showers and thunderstorms throughout the day and Monday evening.

Showers and thunderstorms will occur throughout the day, but the probability of rain will continue into the evening.

There is a level 1 (minor) risk of severe weather across the entire region today.

Some storms may move slowly, causing heavy rainfall and an increased risk of flooding.

Runoff from heavy rain can cause flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Flooding can occur in areas with poor drainage and in urban areas where slow-moving storms can overwhelm sewers.

Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are possible over the next three days, with higher amounts possible in some areas.
