Atlanta man arrested trying to take down South Carolina Confederate flag

The report said the 23-year-old told deputies he “did not agree with what this represented.” The plane was flying high off I-85 in South Carolina.

SOUTH CAROLINA, United States — An Atlanta man reportedly traveled more than 100 miles to try to remove a “giant” Confederate flag Saturday night, according to a report from NBC affiliate WYFF.

The report said the 23-year-old told deputies he “did not agree with what this represented.” The plane was flying high off I-85 in South Carolina.

WYFF said deputies told them the man climbed a fence and a tree to reach the flag, but was unsuccessful.

According to the report, he had a power tool and drill bits to install the flag.

Deputies told WYFF the 23-year-old’s attempt was the second time the homeowners had received unwanted visitors since the flag was raised.

“So obviously the property owners were more aware of the situation because their property had been vandalized on Friday,” Johnathon McGill of the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office told WYFF.

The deputies added that there were “No Trespassing” signs and that the fence was meant to act as a barrier so that no one could pass through.

The report states that after removing the flag, he planned to drive home. He is now charged with trespassing and law enforcement has booked him into the Spartanburg County Detention Center.

He was granted $460 cash bail, deputies told WYFF.
