One dead in two-vehicle crash near Yankton – Mitchell Republic

YANKTON – A 30-year-old man suffered fatal injuries in a two-vehicle crash seven miles west of Yankton on Tuesday morning, July 16.

The names of the people involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, preliminary crash information indicates that the driver of a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt was traveling westbound on SD Highway 50 near mile marker 375. At this location, a dead deer was lying in the westbound lane. The driver struck the deer, lost control of the vehicle, and veered into the eastbound lane. At the same time, the driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt approached from the opposite direction and collided with the first vehicle. Both vehicles came to rest in the southbound ditch.

The driver of the 2008 Cobalt suffered fatal injuries in the accident. The driver of the 2010 Cobalt, a 52-year-old man, suffered life-threatening injuries. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

The accident occurred at about 5:31 a.m.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. All information released so far is preliminary.
