Woman shot in DeLand after tracking stolen purse; 3 arrests, officials say

DeLAND, Florida. – A woman who was tracking her stolen purse to a Checker’s in DeLand was shot at by the suspected thieves Thursday night, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

After the woman had her purse stolen at Taylor Place Apartments earlier that day, she and two others set out after receiving a notification that their credit card had been used at the fast-food restaurant, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The group arrived at Checker’s, confronted the suspects and retrieved the purse before following the suspects’ car to take down the license plate number, the news release said.

When the suspects realized they were being followed, two of them fired shots at the woman’s vehicle, officials said. No one was hit or injured in the shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.

Willie Goosby III, 22; Makhi Edwards, 18; and Alyssa Levy, 26, were taken into custody after they were found in the suspect’s vehicle, which was parked at the owner’s registered address in Deltona, the sheriff’s office said.

Goosby and Edwards are both charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm from a vehicle. Edwards is also charged with violating juvenile probation, records show. At the time of this report, the two were being held without bail.

Levy is charged with three counts of tampering with evidence and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the sheriff’s office said. She was released Friday morning after posting $10,000 bail, records show.

The investigation into the purse theft and credit card fraud is being conducted by DeLand police, the sheriff’s office said.
