Former Chili Pepper Klinghoffer sued for wrongful death after ‘tragic accident’

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer is in big trouble. He is being sued for involuntary manslaughter and negligence after his car struck and killed a pedestrian earlier this year.

The incident occurred in March, when 47-year-old Israel Sanchez died after being struck while crossing the street in Alhambra, east of Los Angeles. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday by Sanchez’s daughter Ashley.

The plaintiff claims that Klinghoffer turned left at an intersection with a marked crossing area in a black SUV without license plates. Video footage provided by the plaintiff shows a black car hitting a man while turning. The car then stops. It is also alleged that Klinghoffer was talking on his cell phone while driving, and the footage does indeed show the driver holding an object over the steering wheel.

Sanchez suffered a violent trauma to the head and later succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

“My father was known as a great cook, the most talented in his family, the greatest grandfather, always full of love and joy,” Ashley Sanchez said in a press release. “His smile was so contagious. His life was taken by the carelessness of someone who wasn’t paying attention to where he was driving.”

Klinghoffer’s lawyer Andrew Brettler described the incident as a “tragic accident.”

He told NBC News: “After the car struck the pedestrian, Josh immediately pulled over, stopped the vehicle, called 911 and waited for police and ambulance to arrive. He is cooperating fully with traffic investigators.”

No arrests have been made yet and Alhambra police spokesman Sergeant Brian Chung said that because the case was ongoing, he could not comment further.

Klinghoffer has had a long career at the center of LA’s music scene, spending a decade with the Chili Peppers, joining in 2009 and staying until 2019, when John Frusciante rejoined.

He later admitted in an interview with Sirius XM that he was “surprised” by his dismissal, but “grateful for all the incredible experiences I’ve had with them over the last ten years.”

He has played with Pearl Jam – with whom he is currently touring – as well as Warpaint, Jane’s Addiction and the Butthole Surfers, and has appeared on records by such diverse figures as Iggy Pop, Morrissey, Gnarls Barkley and Cate Le Bon.

There has been no comment from Klinghoffer on the case so far.
