Spain captain Alvaro Morata will miss the semi-finals of the 2024 European Championship due to suspension

Spain captain Alvaro Morata will miss his team’s semi-final at the European Championship due to suspension.

The 31-year-old received a yellow card after his team’s late winning goal in extra time of their 2-1 victory against Germany in Stuttgart on Friday.

The Atlético Madrid striker had also received a yellow card in his country’s round of 16 win over Georgia, meaning he reached the threshold for a match suspension.

Mikel Merino headed the winning goal for Spain in the 119th minute of the match, securing his team’s place in the semi-finals. Morata, who had been substituted earlier in the match, was subsequently shown a yellow card.

Yellow cards will not be reset until after the quarter-finals of the competition, meaning that any player who receives two yellow cards in the first five matches of the tournament will be suspended for one match.

Morata played in four of his team’s five matches at Euro 2024, starting in all but one appearance in the group stage win over Albania. He was substituted in the 80th minute against Germany and replaced by Mikel Oyarzabal.

Spanish defenders Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand will also miss the semi-finals; Carvajal was sent off in stoppage time of extra time for a second yellow card, while Le Normand, who was substituted at half-time, received his second yellow card of the tournament.

Spain will face the winner of Friday evening’s quarter-final match between France and Portugal in Munich on 9 July.
