Serial rapist sentenced to 31 years in prison

GWERU Regional Magistrate Christopher Maturure on Friday sentenced serial rapist Obert Ncube (29) to an effective prison term of 31 years.

Ncube was also charged with robbery.

Maturure sentenced Ncube to 15 years in prison for each of the rape charges and one year in prison for the robbery charge.

Ncube was initially charged with five counts of rape before charges were dropped on two counts after the complainants failed to appear in court.

Last year, Ncube was found guilty of similar charges and sentenced to 25 years in prison.

This means he will now spend a total of 31 years in prison.

In delivering the verdict, Maturure said Ncube was a brutal criminal who used violence against defenceless and defenseless women, raped them without protection and performed oral sex on them.

The State’s case centred on the fact that the plaintiff, an 18-year-old woman (name withheld), was walking past the Woodlands dumping site on August 6 last year when Ncube suddenly grabbed her from behind, groped her and threw her to the ground.

Ncube, the court heard, threatened the victim with a knife and raped her.

The court also heard that in the same month, Ncube went to a city hotel armed with a knife and dragged a sex worker to a bush area in Gweru’s light industrial area, where he raped her and forced her to suck his penis for several hours.

Charges have been brought against Eggrina Matutu.
