Tamayo Perry, actor and surfing legend, killed in shark attack

Tamayo Perry, a legendary surfer and actor who appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, was killed in a shark attack in Hawaii on Sunday.

Perry, 49, was attacked while surfing off the coast of Oahu near Goat Island on Sunday afternoon, Honolulu Emergency Services said.

A caller reported seeing a fatally injured surfer at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu. Lifeguards were able to bring him to shore, but paramedics pronounced Perry dead at the scene. He was reportedly missing several limbs and had suffered bite wounds.

“He’s very well known on the North Shore. He’s a world-renowned professional surfer,” Kurt Lager, deputy director of Honolulu Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services, said at a news conference. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people liked him, he liked everyone else even more.”

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi praised Perry as a “legendary waterman” who won the Pipeline Masters in 1999.

Perry has appeared in numerous films and television shows filmed in Hawaii, including Blue Crush, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Hawaii Five-0.

He has also been a lifeguard for the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety since July 2016. Following the incident, the department issued shark warnings throughout the region.

Perry’s death came days after the death of Taylor Willy, another local actor who appeared in films such as “Forget About Your Ex” and more than 170 episodes of the “Hawaii Five-0” reboot.
