Communities rebuild after devastating floods

CONROE, TXTeams are on the ground helping communities recover from last week’s devastating floods. Today, homeowners are picking up the pieces and working to rebuild their lives and homes.

Mountains of debris line the streets of the River Plantation community Monday. Homeowners are forced to pile furniture, crumbling drywall, and insulation along roadsides. It is a sad reminder of the devastation left by the floods.

“This is from last week’s flood. You can see the line,” said Hert Hernandez, a homeowner in the River Plantation neighborhood. “Be careful here. It’s very slippery.”

Hernández saw his house flooded three times. The first was during Hurricane Harvey, then again during the January storm, and most recently last week. Hernandez estimates the flooding caused between $180,000 and $200,000 in damage.

“I had to remove everything. You can see here, there’s my furniture, my dining room set, my table, my chairs,” Hernández said. “Everything you have because you’re a hard worker, and then you lose it all in seconds.”

FOX 26 Houston is now on the FOX LOCAL app available via Apple TV, Amazon FireTV, Roku, Google Android TV and Vizio!

Down the street from Hernandez, homeowner Chuck Davis is also facing rebuilding after floodwaters damaged his home.

“We’re trying to get the mud out because you can’t walk. You’ll slip and fall. It’s just slime,” said Chuck Davis, another homeowner in the River Plantation community.

This isn’t Davis’ first flood. His property was also flooded during Hurricane Harvey.

“The first thing I did was buy humidifiers. I bought every one they had before I could even go into the neighborhood and start eliminating the humidity,” Davis said.

Both homeowners we spoke with say they have flood insurance.

Davis said he owned other properties, so he had a place to stay while they fixed up his house. Meanwhile, Hernández and his family are staying in a hotel until they can return home.
