Austin Butler reveals motorcycle accident on the set of “The Bikeriders”

For Austin Butler, filming did not go entirely smoothly The bikers!

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE at the film’s premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, June 17, the 32-year-old actor revealed that he had an accident while riding his motorcycle on set.

“We were shooting at night and we tripped on a patch of wet leaves and I fell, but luckily I landed on my feet,” he tells PEOPLE.

“But I was just thinking about the bike,” he adds. “I just wanted to make sure it was OK.”

Despite the accident, Butler, who plays the role of Benny in “The 4000,” The Bikerstells PEOPLE that making the film brought him closer to his father through their shared love of motorcycles.

“My dad rode motorcycles, so I think… It’s been cool to talk about my dad a lot lately because he gave me my first love of motorcycles,” Butler says of filming the movie, which follows a local Midwestern motorcycle club that evolves into a full-blown gang.

Butlers adds that he can hardly wait for his father, David Butler to see the film and that his father was not worried about the bicycle racing in the film.

“He supported it,” the star tells PEOPLE.

Butler walked the red carpet alone at the premiere on Monday, but was seen at the after-party with his girlfriend Kaia Gerber, 22.

The couple appeared to be in good spirits as they sat together, with Gerber placing a hand on the actor’s leg.

Weekly entertainment shared a video of Butler walking toward Gerber to kiss her as she stands in the crowd at the TCL Chinese Theater.

Back in May, a source told PEOPLE that things were “going strong” between the two after they first sparked rumors of a romance in December 2021.

“They held hands the whole way to dinner and stopped and hugged a few times before heading out to a club (on May 24),” the insider said. “They definitely looked happy and in love.”
