US consulate attacked during Palestine protest

The US consulate in North Sydney was vandalised for the second time in months after police said a person smashed windows with a sledgehammer.

Police were called to the diplomatic mission on Miller Street shortly after 3 a.m. on Monday after nine windows were smashed and the door was painted with graffiti.

Police video footage shows a person in a dark hoodie with his face covered carrying what appears to be a “small sledgehammer.”

Police have since appealed to anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident or may have witnessed it to come forward or contact Crime Stoppers.

Pictures of the consulate show that the windows are painted with an inverted red triangle, a common symbol of recent pro-Palestinian protests.

The image first appeared in Hamas war footage and has since become a symbol of Palestinian resistance at the international level in the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.

In April, the US consulate was defaced with red paint and the words “Free Gaza,” before its counterpart in Melbourne was attacked the following month.
