Restaurant calls for inclusivity after hate incidents

The co-owners of a Canton restaurant have a message for the community after becoming the target of hate speech and vandalism. Ellie Skinner and Leigh Philipkosky have a lot to celebrate with the 13th anniversary of their Canton restaurant, Love & Regret. It’s also Pride Month, which they’re embracing. They’re celebrating with a fun twist on their burger — now topped with glitter and “Pride Mayo” — and specialty drinks at the bar. Proceeds will benefit a nonprofit that focuses on suicide prevention among LGBTQIA+ youth. “It’s June, and we’re celebrating all month long. We’re supporting The Trevor Project, which is very dear to Ellie and (me),” Philipkosky, co-owner and executive chef of Love & Regret, said in a social media video. The restaurant recently faced several hateful incidents after someone posted an anti-LGBTQIA+ slur on their social media. In another incident, someone left a racist message on the sidewalk outside their door. “We are a loving city. This is unacceptable. Throw your hate in the trash. It’s not welcome here and we will not tolerate it,” Skinner said. In another incident, the restaurant’s gay pride flags were ripped out and thrown into the street. Leaders in Canton are now speaking out and condemning these acts. “This is just not what this neighborhood is about, not what the community association is about, not what we want in this neighborhood in any way, shape or form,” said Amanda Bourgeois, president of the Canton Community Association. Skinner and Philipkosky said they will not let hate win. Instead, they plan to continue their mission of spreading inclusivity in their community. “Just kindness and understanding that people come from different backgrounds and sexual orientations and that we’re all human and we all live here,” Philipkosky said. OLAR has many community events planned throughout the year, from the annual Fire Hero Chili Cook-Off to a Pride party that will be held on June 23.
