Police car hits cyclist, investigations ongoing

VERO BEACH – A police investigation is underway after a bicyclist was struck by a police vehicle in a bike lane on State Road A1A, a police spokesman said.

The man was admitted to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce and released the same day the accident occurred late last week, said Vero Beach police spokeswoman Officer Kelsea Callahan.

The accident occurred on May 30 at around 8:30 a.m. on SR A1A at Camelia Lane south of Beachland Boulevard.

“It’s still under investigation, so there’s not really a lot of information available,” Callahan said.

The officer was turning west from SR A1A onto Camelia Lane when she struck the bicyclist, who Callahan said was traveling on the west side of SR A1A and crossing Camelia Lane. It was unclear whether the man was traveling north or south.

“She was just patrolling the area,” Callahan said. “So she didn’t do anything special… it’s a very busy area there, but the supervisor is still doing an ongoing investigation, so we don’t know everything yet.”

The officer’s name was not released, but Callahan said she has been with the department for less than five years and this was the first incident of this kind involving the officer during her time there.

The officer was in a black and white Dodge Charger patrol car, she said.

Jon Ballard, a homeowner on the north side of Camelia Lane and SR A1A, said he saw the aftermath of the accident. A man was lying on the sidewalk and two police and fire trucks were parked along the street, he said.
